West coast tour 2008

Day 1

Left Cape Town on our epic journey through the West Coast, Fish River Canyon, Orange River, Cederberg and back to Cape Town. The first day took us on the coast through Melkbosstrand,  Vredendal and on to Strandfontein where we stayed at a very cozy B&B at the beach.

Day 2

From Strandfontein we made our way north through Lutzville,Garies and on to Hondeklipbaai where we stayed for the night. Hondeklipbaai is a very small mission town in the heart of the diamond producing area of South Africa.

Day 3

From Hondeklipbaai we went into the diamond area up towards Alexander Bay at on to Sendelingsdrift on the Namibian border. Sendelingsdrift is in the heart of the Richtersveld.

Day 4

We took the 4x4 and went exploring into the Richtersveld National Park for the day. The Richtersveld is truly one of the 8 wonders of the world and holds a very special place in my heart.

Day 5

Crossing the border into Namibia on the famous Sendelingsdrif pond we road a very beautiful dirt road all along the Orange River towards Fish River Canyon where we camped for the night. The Fish River Canyon is a breathtaking experience.

Day 6

We made an early start to experience the crisp desert air riding towards Vioolsdrif border and onto Aquacade camp on the banks of the Orange River. We arrived before lunch to row on the Orange River for the rest of the day. A very good friend of mine owns aquacade and this makes for a very pleasant stay.

Day 7

Driving back towards Springbok on the tar was very nice and we had breakfast at the Wimpy. From Springbok we did some off road towards Kamieskroon, Bitterfontein and arrived in Van Rhynsdorp where we stayed over for the night.

Day 8

The Cederberg awaits us. From Van Rhynsdorp we left for the beautiful Cederberg area to experience nature at it’s best. We stayed at the majestic Biedouw camp, the home of the www.cabc.co.za. Here we stayed for the night in one of the bungalows.

Day 9

After breakfast we made our way towards Wupperthal a small mission town in the heart of the Cederberg. Then it was the Pakhuis pass (the hardest part of the journey) towards Cederberg Lodge for lunch and on through the Koue Bokkeveld towards Ceres where we stayed for the night.

Day 10

Our last day driving over the Ceres pass and stopping before Bainskloof pass for a beer with my good friend Willie. Then the Bainskloof pass into Wellington and onto Cape Town where we said our goodbyes.
