The comfort and elegance of your accommodations ensure a peaceful night's rest, so you'll be refreshed and ready to embark on the extraordinary journey that awaits you in the morning.
Day 2: Motorcycle Familiarisation and
Off-Road Riding Skills Course
As we prepare to embark on our exciting motorcycle adventure through South Africa, we'll first ensure youโre acquainted with your chosen bike. We'll guide you through the setup process, show you how to use your GPS or navigation app, and even take you on a scenic outride to Motorrad Adventures training grounds for an off-road riding skills workshop. This workshop will equip you with crucial tips and techniques to help you navigate the off-road sections of our journey with ease and confidence. Once we've had our fill of adventure for the day, we'll enjoy a scrumptious lunch at one of the area's top restaurants, and following that, we'll embark on the Human Origins Tour at Maropeng, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You'll have the chance to visit famous fossil dig sites and follow in the footsteps of our hominin ancestors. This tour is an exclusive and unforgettable journey of storytelling as you walk in the footsteps of our hominin ancestors and learn more about the story of human origins.
Day 3: Cradle of Humankind to Clarens
After indulging in a hearty breakfast at the lodge, we eagerly jump on our bikes, ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Our first day of riding is a delightful blend of smooth paved roads and well-maintained gravel back roads, leading us away from the bustling city of Johannesburg and into the serene South African countryside, towards the quaint and charming village of Clarens. This picturesque village is nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province. Renowned for its breathtaking sandstone mountains and idyllic climate, Clarens is truly one of the most enchanting spots in South Africa. Upon arrival, we have ample time to explore the many fascinating shops, eateries, and craft breweries dotted around the village.
Day 4: Clarens to Himeville
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure today. Just outside Clarens lies the breathtaking Golden Gate Highlands National Park. As you wind your way through the park's twisty roads on your motorcycle, you'll be blown away by the stunning golden sandstone cliffs. You might even catch a glimpse of some of the wild creatures that call this place home, like black wildebeest, blesbok, zebra, and maybe even the elusive bearded vulture. But the excitement doesn't stop there... Todayโs ride will also take you through the awe-inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, past the mighty Sterkfontein Dam, and even into the heart of history itself. This is the very spot where the epic battle of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift was fought during the Anglo-Zulu War in January 1879. After all that excitement, you'll be ready for a delicious lunch at a local country restaurant known as a "Padstal". As the dayโs adventure continues, the last leg of the ride takes you through the Lower Lotheni region of Kwa-Zulu Natal on a scenic gravel road. You'll pass through traditional Zulu villages nestled in the mountains and experience the true beauty of this incredible country.
Day 5: Himeville to Hogsback
Get ready for an exciting ride today because we'll be picking up the pace just a little bit. We'll be cruising through some twisty roads that will take us out of Kwa-Zulu Natal all the way to the Eastern Cape province. Our destination? A charming and peaceful village called Hogsback which is nestled in the breathtaking Amathole Mountains. Did you know that many people believe that J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired by this very place when he wrote The Lord of the Rings? The scenery here is awe-inspiring, with lush forests, rolling hills, and stunning waterfalls at every turn. On route, we'll be taking some off-road gravel sections that will lead us through traditional African villages where you can spot Nguni cattle grazing just like they did hundreds of years ago. These rural areas are steeped in cultural history and are a fascinating glimpse into the past. You'll see traditional mud huts, thatched roofs, and locals going about their daily lives in a way that hasn't changed much for hundreds of years. Once we arrive in Hogsback, you'll have plenty of time to explore the famous labyrinth, stroll along the mountain edge, or visit the stunning Madonna and Child waterfall. The labyrinth is a must-see attraction, with its intricate design and stunning views. The waterfall is breathtaking - the perfect place to take a dip and cool off after a long day of riding. This will be an unforgettable ride with stunning scenery, rich culture, and plenty of adventure.
Day 6: Hogsback to Nieu Bethesda
During today's ride, you'll notice that the landscape will open up, and the vegetation will thin out as we transition into South Africa's Karoo region. The Karoo is a vast area that covers around 32% of South Africa's landmass and is mainly a semi-arid desert. It's one of the best places in the world to ride an adventure bike! To truly experience the Karoo, we'll travel its back roads, enjoying the vast open spaces, the indigo-blue dome of the sky overhead, and the unique landscapes that blend into the horizon. If you stop your bike anywhere in the Karoo, you'll immediately experience the immense silence and peace of this extraordinary place. For the next two nights, we'll stay in the charming village of Nieu Bethesda, which boasts stunning landscapes, a rich history, and untouched beauty. On route at a secluded farm near the village, we'll indulge in a slice of cake and a cup of authentic Karoo coffee. Here, we'll also have the opportunity to explore the captivating world of Karoo fossils, guided by our knowledgeable host, JP, who will show us the largest collection of Karoo fossils in South Africa. We'll also visit remarkable cave shelters on the farm that house ancient paintings left by the San Bushmen hundreds of years ago. After this fascinating afternoon, we'll complete the final few kilometres of our ride and check into our splendid guesthouses in Nieu-Bethesda.
Day 7: Rest Day in Nieu Bethesda with an optional off-road ride around the Compassberg
Nieu-Bethesda offers a plethora of experiences, and we are thrilled to have an extended stay here. We will begin the day with a hearty breakfast, fuelling us for the exciting activities ahead. After breakfast, we hop on our bikes and embark on an optional 90km off-road excursion around the famous Compassberg. This captivating pointed mountain greets visitors as they enter Nieu-Bethesda. As we explore, we will keep our eyes peeled for some โstone menโ, adding an element of adventure to our ride. Our cameras will allow us to capture the beauty of Karoo windpumps and landscapes along the way. Returning to Nieu-Bethesda in time for lunch, we will have the option to embark on a tour of the renowned Owl House, a masterpiece created by the talented artist Helen Martins. During this exclusive viewing, we will have the chance to explore the camel yard and house, immersing ourselves in the magical ambience while learning about the histories and stories behind each sculpture. After the tour of the Owl House, you will have the opportunity to visit the James Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre. Here, Andries, the local fossil expert, will share his vast knowledge about the peculiar creatures that once roamed the Karoo plains a staggering 150 million years ago, predating even the most famous dinosaurs. Andries will lead you down to the river, where you'll will witness un-excavated sites containing actual fossils still embedded in the sediment. This thrilling fossil adventure will give you a deeper understanding of the ancient history of this region. Following the fossil exploration, you will have some free time to explore the village until dinner time. This is the perfect opportunity to discover the hidden gems and unique charm that Nieu-Bethesda has to offer. As the day draws to a close, we will indulge in a delectable Karoo meal at an award-winning restaurant, ensuring a memorable and satisfying end to our time in Nieu-Bethesda.
โDay 8: Nieu Bethesda to Addo
Itโs always sad to leave Nieu Bethesda, but after a hearty breakfast, we'll embark on an exhilarating off-road ride towards Graaff-Reinet. This charming place holds the distinction of being the fourth oldest town in South Africa. Our journey will take us through the magnificent Camdeboo National Park, where we will witness a sight that will leave you in awe - the Valley of Desolation. From this vantage point, we can imagine the once grand inland swamp that has now transformed into the vast and arid Karoo landscape. The sheer beauty of the Karoo will take your breath away as we ride along some truly striking gravel roads with lots of stops for photos of the remarkable scenery. The back road that leads us away from Graaff Reinet is absolutely breathtaking. A notable stop is a place weโve come to call Aloe Valley, where each one of the north-facing hills is covered with medicinal Aloe Ferox. The amaXhosa tribe has legends about the Aloe warriors who spring up from the Earth by the thousand. โTheir spears are the flowers, their leaves are their shields, and the stems are their bodies". With a watchful eye, they see us ride past on our motorcycles.ย We stop for a wonderful lunch at the Royal Hotel in the quaint town of Steytlerville. From here on, the route becomes even more impressive! We drive through little Karoo towns and wind through mountains until we reach our accommodation in time for a game drive in the Addo National Park. Did you know that Addo National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa? This stunning park boasts seven different vegetation zones and is the only park in the world that offers protection to โAfricaโs Big 7 - lions, buffalos, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards, whales, and great white sharks. Itโs a truly remarkable place to visit.
Day 9: Addo to Oudtshoorn
Today, we are headed towards the East Coast of South Africa today, and we pass just north of Jeffreys Bay. If youโve ever taken a stab at surfing, then youโre likely to be aware that Jeffreys Bay is one of the top five surfing meccas in the world. Every July, the World Surf League's competition takes place here, drawing in surf enthusiasts and professionals from around the globe. As the day unfolds, we merge onto Route 62, and youโll be treated to South Africa's own version of America's Route 66. The route takes us through winding mountain passes that slowly reveal breathtaking views of lush green valleys, crystal streams, and ancient rock formations that date back millions of years. It is a sight to behold and a motorcycle riding experience you wonโt forget. Our destination for the evening is a private game reserve just outside the town of Oudtshoorn. Youโll see some big birds along the way! Oudtshoorn, known as the world's ostrich capital, is situated between the Swartberg Mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Tonightโs agenda includes an exhilarating sunset game drive to witness some majestic lions in action, followed by a scrumptious dinner in the African bushveld.
Day 10: Oudtshoorn to Knysna
Today takes us towards the Indian Ocean, and the route is truly remarkable. We start on fantastic gravel roads just outside of Oudtshoorn, leading us to one of South Africaโs must-visit passes, the Prince Alfred Pass. This pass is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque in the country. It winds down from Uniondale in the Karoo and emerges at the coast near Knysna. Construction on the pass began in the 1800s and was overseen by Thomas Bain, who was a legendary figure in the field of construction. This pass is considered his masterpiece, and despite using only basic equipment and convict labour, Bain's "can-do" attitude and ingenuity made it possible. Notably, the exceptional dry-walling method of construction he used is particularly noteworthy. Bain constructed a total of 29 passes in the Cape colony during his lifetime. We are staying overnight in Knysna, a delightful seaside town known for its fresh oysters and a distinctive motorcycle museum that you can visit. The Motorcycle Room celebrates nostalgic memories of the bikes we grew up with, those we haven't seen in years, and the ones we still miss. This evening's dinner is a unique experience. We'll be cruising on South Africa's only paddle steamer across the lagoon to the famous Knysna Heads, where we'll enjoy a delicious meal onboard.
Day 11: Knysna to Barrydale
Today, our route will take us along the beautiful coastline and then up the renowned Seven Passes Road before we return to Route 62. Although the Seven Passes Road starts and ends on the tarmac, most of the journey is a well-maintained gravel road. You will be surrounded by lush forests, streams, rivers, and gorges. The Seven Passes Road is such an exceptional route that it has been declared a national monument, along with its historic bridges. We'll have a quick coffee stop at the charming village of Wilderness, which overlooks the ocean, before we resume our journey on Route 62. Along the way, we will encounter a famous roadside cafรฉ, Ronnieโs Sex Shop. Ronnie has owned this cafรฉ proudly for over four decades. He can still be found there, with his plaited ponytail and long white beard. In the 1970s, it was originally a farm stall selling fruits and vegetables to weary travellers. One day, Ronnieโs friends played a prank on him by painting the word โSexโ on the wall. Ronnie was unhappy, but his friends suggested that he should open a roadside cafรฉ instead. Ronnie loved the idea and transformed the farm stall into a fully stocked bar. He served coffee in the morning and booze at night. Now, bras, underwear, t-shirts, and caps, all signed by travellers worldwide, hang above the bar as souvenirs. We will stop here for a drink and a visit. Afterward, we will travel about 20km to reach our destination, Barrydale. The history of Barrydale dates back to the early 18th century when farmers settled in the area in search of fertile, arable land with water. They built their church at the meeting point of the R62 and R324 roads. This area is also home to a variety of bird species, such as the Cape eagle-owl, hadeda ibis, grey heron, sunbird, and fiscal shrike. The fiscal shrike impales its prey on acacia thorns or barbed wire. Additionally, black eagles can be spotted soaring high overhead on the thermals.
Day 12: Barrydale to Hermanus
Today will be exciting riding as we leave Barrydale and head down Tradouws Pass. Along the way, we'll see stunning mountain views and plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos. If we're lucky, we might even spot some baboons. Our next stop is Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point in Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Before reaching there, we need to take a small ferry at Malagas to cross the Breede River, which is always an exciting experience. Cape Agulhas is famous for its stunning coastline, which has both rocky and sandy beaches. It is considered the traditional dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The cape has always posed a significant challenge for sailors on the traditional clipper route, and it is known as one of the great capes. Formerly known as Cape L'Agulhas, we will spend some time exploring the beach before moving up the coast to Gansbaai. Once we arrive there, we will board a boat to see the Southern Right Whales that come to breed off the coast. Our day ends at our seaside guest house in the coastal town of Hermanus, where we can enjoy our evening meal while watching the African sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 13: Hermanus to Paternoster
As we leave Hermanus, we ride along the coast. It's common to see dolphins frolicking in the waves. Then we head inland, passing through stunning landscapes towards the small village of Franschhoek. It is known as the country's food and wine capital. The name "Franschhoek" is roughly translated from Dutch to French Corner. The village is nestled in the Cape Winelands of South Africa. The tree-lined streets are filled with galleries and antique shops, and vineyards established more than 300 years ago cascade over the hills just outside town. We'll stop at one of the many beautiful coffee shops for a break and a slice of delicious cake. Further down the road, we'll stop at the statue of Nelson Mandela standing tall outside the old Victor Verster Prison, now renamed the Drakenstein Correctional Centre. This is where Nelson Mandela spent the final part of his 27 years of imprisonment. In 1982, Mandela was moved from the maximum security prison on Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison in Tokai, Cape Town. From there, he was transferred to the then Victor Verster Prison on 9 December 1988, where he resided in a private house within the prison grounds. Victor Verster, a farm prison, was often used as a transitional place for releasing lower-risk political prisoners. Mandela remained at Victor Verster Prison for another 14 months until his release on 11 February 1990. After that, we will head to the oldest hotel in the Western Cape for lunch at the beautiful Royal Hotel in Riebeek Kasteel. Following a leisurely lunch, we will travel along gravel roads to our destination on the west coast, the small village of Paternoster. It is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast of South Africa, and the origin of the name remains unknown. Many people believe that the name, which means "Our Father" in Latin, refers to prayers said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when they became shipwrecked on the jagged coast here. Paternoster has many top restaurants serving the best cuisine, and we will enjoy a luxurious evening dining experience.
Day 14: Paternoster to Cape Town
Today is our last day of adventure together. We ride south down the coast, and as we approach Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, the sight of Table Mountain standing proudly above the bay fills us with excitement. However, before we head to our accommodation at the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, we have some more exploring to do. A visit to Cape Point for lunch, and we can't miss the epic ride down one of the world's greatest coastal roads, Chapman's Peak Drive.ย Our first stop is Cape Point in the Table Mountain National Park, located at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula. The point juts out like an outstretched arm with rugged rocks and sheer cliffs that tower over 200 meters above the sea, cutting deep into the ocean and providing a spectacular background for the park's rich biodiversity. After having a bite to eat in the park, we make our way into Cape Town on what can only be described as one of the best coastal roads to ride on a motorcycle in the world... Chapman's Peak Drive is a breathtaking route that winds along the jagged cliffs of the Cape Peninsula. This iconic road offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and its majestic mountains. The road is an engineering marvel, with 114 twists and turns carved into the mountainside. As we navigate this picturesque route, we'll be treated to stunning vistas at every turn, with the sparkling blue waters below and the towering peaks above.ย Chapman's Peak Drive is not just a scenic drive; it's the stunning road that leads us to Cape Town, the final destination of our adventure together. โAs we gather for our final dinner together, the breathtaking view of the pristine waterfront leaves us speechless. The sun is setting, casting a golden glow over Table Bay, and we can't help but feel grateful for the unforgettable South African motorcycle adventure we've enjoyed. Looking back on the past two weeks, we recall the challenges and thrills we experienced, the camaraderie we shared with our fellow adventurers, and the stunning natural beauty that surrounded us throughout our journey. These memories will stay with us forever, and we'll always cherish the friendships we've formed and the moments we've shared. With heavy hearts but lifted spirits, we bid farewell to South Africa, knowing that this exceptional experience will hold a special place in our hearts for years to come.
