Day 1: Cape Town to Paternoster

As we prepare to embark on our exciting motorcycle adventure through South Africa and into Namibia, we've made the first day of the tour an easy one to ensure you have the time to get acquainted with your chosen bike. We'll also guide you through the process of how to use your GPS or navigation app.  We set off from Cape Town, riding our bikes up South Africa's West Coast to the seaside village of Paternoster. This village is one of the oldest fishing communities along the West Coast, and the origin of its name remains a mystery. Many believe that "Paternoster," which means "Our Father" in Latin, refers to the prayers said by Catholic Portuguese seamen who became shipwrecked on the rugged coastline here. Today, along the route, you'll have the opportunity to visit the famous West Coast Fossil Park, renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved fossil remains from the terminal Miocene and Pliocene eras, dating back approximately 5.2 million years. During this period, many now-extinct animals such as saber-toothed cats, short-necked giraffes, hunting hyenas, and African bears roamed the west coast, which featured a more subtropical climate with lush riverine forests and open grasslands.

Day 2: Paternoster to Springbok

Today we say goodbye to the coastal town of Paternoster and head out on our adventure bikes towards Springbok, the capital of Namaqualand. The journey will take us through the arid and rugged landscapes of the Namaqualand region, known for its stunning natural beauty and unique flora and fauna. Each year, after the rains, the landscape blooms with hundreds of thousands of daisies, and the landscape transforms into a beautiful area to ride an adventure motorcycle through The cold Benguela Current, which flows northward along the South African and Namibian coasts, is a key factor that has shaped the unique desert environment of this region, suppressing rainfall and creating a fog-based ecosystem that supports a diverse array of hardy plants and animals. As we ride our bikes through this arid landscape, we'll be in awe of the resilience of the local flora and fauna, which have adapted to thrive in these challenging conditions. We'll encounter a diverse array of geological formations, from towering rock formations to gently rolling hills, each offering breathtaking vistas. Traversing the winding roads, we'll navigate through small towns and villages, gaining insight into the local culture and way of life. Along the way, we'll make strategic stops to refuel both our bikes and ourselves, allowing us to recharge and continue our motorcycle adventure. The town of Springbok is the Gateway to Namibia, and we’ll be overnighting here before crossing the border. Springbok is set in a narrow valley bisecting the granite domes of the Klein Koperberge, the area is called the Garden of the Gods because of its wonderous display of flowers.

Day 3: Springbok to Norotschama

It’s a short day today. We depart from the charming town of Springbok, our sights set on the captivating Namibian landscape that lies ahead. We embark on our motorcycles, eager to explore the winding roads and discover this region’s hidden gems.   As we cross the border into Namibia, we are greeted by the stark beauty of the Namib Desert, one of the world's oldest and most renowned desert ecosystems. The harsh, arid climate and the vast landscapes create a sense of rugged adventure, beckoning us to explore its untamed splendour. You’ll start to sense that Namibia is a great place for a motorcycle adventure Our destination is the Norotshama River Resort, nestled along the banks of the mighty Orange River, which serves as the natural border between South Africa and Namibia. The resort is set in the heart of the Aussenkehr Grape Valley, home to the largest export table grape farms in the southern hemisphere.   The resort offers many activities, from relaxing by the river's edge to exploring the surrounding landscapes and historical sites on foot, mountain biking or river rafting down the Orange River.   The Norotshama River Resort provides the ideal base camp for us to immerse ourselves in the splendour of Namibia and recharge for the next leg of our adventure.

Day 4: Norotschama to Lüderitz

After breakfast, we leave the tranquil Norotshama lodge and head towards the town of Lüderitz, situated on the haunting Skeleton Coast. The ride today promises to be a treat as we ride our motorcycles through vast open plains dotted with the occasional traditional Namibian homestead and skirt the edge of the Namib Desert, the world's oldest desert. Namibia is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, and today's journey will showcase the country's raw natural beauty. Namibia has long been a popular destination for adventure motorcyclists, with the country's dramatic scenery, coastline and abundant wildlife being the main attractions Our destination, Lüderitz, is an isolated coastal town in southern Namibia, situated on the wild and windy shores of the Skeleton Coast. It is surrounded by the Namib Desert and is accessible by only one road. Despite this isolation, the harbour town has a quiet charm under cobalt blue skies. Visitors to this coastal town are encouraged to explore the colonial buildings and the brightly coloured German Art Deco-style architecture, which contrasts starkly with the rocky Atlantic coastline of southern Namibia. After a day of adventure motorcycle riding through the stunning and varied Namibian landscapes and terrains, we'll arrive at our accommodation in Lüderitz, ready to explore this unique town’s hidden secrets.

Day 5: Rest Day. Exploring Lüderitz

Today, you have the opportunity to take a well-deserved day off the bike and explore the unique charm of this remarkable destination. Lüderitz, a quaint German-influenced town, boasts a rich history and a stunning natural landscape that sets it apart from the rest of Namibia. The town's architectural legacy, with its distinctive German colonial buildings, provides a captivating backdrop to our explorations. As we wander through the streets, you can't help but marvel at the town's old-world charm and the rugged, otherworldly beauty of the surrounding desert and coastline One of the must-see attractions near Lüderitz is Kolmanskop, a once-thriving diamond mining town that has been reclaimed by the encroaching sands of the Namib Desert. Exploring these ghostly, sand-filled streets and houses offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's prosperous past and its ultimate decline, as well as some spectacular photo opportunities. Beyond Kolmanskop, you’ll have the option to venture to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, a vast and diverse protected area that showcases the breathtaking landscapes of the Namib Desert. The park's towering sand dunes, sculpted by the relentless desert winds, are a testament to the power of nature and the resilience of the desert ecosystem. You can also explore the Lüderitz Peninsula, where you can admire the dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline and abundant birdlife in the lagoon area, including pink flamingos. At Diaz Point, you’ll find yourself standing on the spot where Bartholomew Diaz first landed in Southern Africa, and even further, you can see the Bogenfels, which is a famous rock arch. Take a catamaran tour to Halifax Island and see dolphins, penguins, seals and whales. There is so much to do and see in this gem of a town, and we are grateful to have the chance to savour its unique atmosphere and natural wonders during our rest day here.

Day 6: Lüderitz to At Kroenenhof

After a hearty breakfast, we embark on the 6th day of our adventure motorcycle tour of Namibia. We depart the lovely town of Lüderitz and journey towards the Kronenhof Private Game Reserve, a stunning oasis nestled in the heart of the Namib Desert. As we ride through the rugged terrain, the landscape transforms from coastal to the vast, arid desert. The Namib Desert, one of the world's oldest deserts, stretches along Namibia's western coast, and its harsh beauty is a true marvel to behold. Along the way, we admire the unique geological formations, towering sand dunes, and occasional glimpses of desert-adapted wildlife such as oryx and springbok as we head north towards the Sossusvlei region We stop in at Helmeringhausen, a settlement in the Karas Region of southern Namibia, for a delicious lunch. As we arrive at Kronenhof, we are greeted by the lush, verdant vegetation that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert. This privately owned reserve is a haven for conservation efforts, and as the golden hues of the evening sunlight cast a mesmerising glow over the terrain, keep your eyes peeled for the diverse array of wildlife that calls this region home. From graceful giraffes to majestic zebras, from the iconic silhouette of the oryx to the striking presence of ostriches, each sighting is a testament to the rich biodiversity of Southern Namibia. All this can be enjoyed from an open-top Land Rover on a leisurely sunset drive through the expansive plains of Kronenhof Lodge’s private reserve.

Day 7: At Kronenhof to Sossusvlei

Leaving the beautiful Kronenhof Private Lodge after a hearty breakfast, we saddle up for the next leg of our exhilarating ride through the captivating landscapes of the Namib Desert. As we navigate the winding roads, the stark contrast between the lush greenery of the lodge and the arid, rugged terrain surrounding us becomes increasingly evident. The striking diversity of Namibia's geography, from the vast, sun-baked deserts that stretch endlessly to the horizon to the largest sand dunes in the world that seem to touch the sky, is captivating. Today, we head for the iconic Sossusvlei, a natural wonder that has long captured the imaginations of adventurers and photographers alike. The Sossusvlei Region, located in southwestern Namibia, is characterised primarily by the Namib Naukluft Park and its highlights, Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei. Close to Sossusvlei is a clay pan known as Deadvlei, featuring dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded, creating an abundance of water that allowed camel thorn trees to grow. However, as the climate changed, the sand dunes encroached upon the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area and causing the trees to die.  The trees are estimated to be around 900 years old; however, they have not decomposed due to the dry climate. This region boasts remarkable diversity, with the breathtaking Namib Desert — the oldest desert in the world — to the west and the Great Escarpment forming a natural barrier between the Namib Desert and the central highlands to the far east. With its ancient geology, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife, this area is a true gem of Namibia.

Day 8: Sossusvlei to Alte Kalkofen

On the eighth day of our exhilarating Namibia is Calling Adventure motorcycle tour, we embark on a captivating journey from the breathtaking Sossusvlei dunes to the rugged and historic Alte Kalkofen, situated between the Namibian towns of Keetmanshoop and Luderitz.   This area is rich in unique flora. The lodge is renowned for its fascinating collection of Lithops, also known as “Flowering Stones, " and it boasts the largest registered collection of Lithops in Namibia.   As we ride through the diverse terrain, our senses are enveloped by the raw, untamed beauty that defines Namibia's landscape - from the towering, ochre-hued dunes of the Namib Desert that seem to stretch endlessly towards the horizon, to the vast, sun-drenched plains and rugged, weathered rock formations. You may be fortunate enough to spot the rare Namib Desert Horses, a feral breed that has adapted to the harsh climate and now calls the Namib Desert home. These magnificent creatures are believed to be descendants of horses once used by the German cavalry in the early 20th century.   The transition from the awe-inspiring Sossusvlei to the stark beauty of the Alte Kalkofen region exemplifies the extraordinary geographic variations that make Namibia such a captivating and unique destination for adventure motorcyclists.   The Alte Kalkofen area is steeped in history, with remnants of former mining operations and the ruins of an old German settlement serving as poignant reminders of Namibia’s colonial past.

Day 9: Alte Kalkofen to Fish River Canyon

Today, the adventure takes us on a journey from Alte Kalkofen to the Fish River Canyon, a route that promises to deliver awe-inspiring vistas and an unforgettable adventure motorcycle riding experience.   The Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia is Africa's largest canyon and the second most visited attraction in the country. Spanning 160 km in length, up to 27 km in width, and nearly 550 meters in depth, the canyon originated around 650 million years ago due to plate movement. Glaciation 300 million years ago further deepened the canyon, and 60 million years of continental drift increased erosion.   The Fish River, Namibia's longest interior river, carved the plateau into a twisting, meandering lower canyon. During the late summer, the typically dry river floods, forming narrow pools. The extreme arid conditions of the region have fostered a unique and resilient desert ecosystem that supports a diverse array of adapted wildlife, including the desert-dwelling Hartmann's mountain zebra, the nimble and sure-footed klipspringer antelope, and the iconic Namibian rock agama, whose camouflage and survival strategies are perfectly suited to this harsh environment.   As the motorcycle convoy winds its way through this ancient region, riders will be treated to stunning vistas of the canyon's immense scale and the striking red-hued sandstone formations that characterise the area.   The canyon is also home to a Quiver Tree Forest, a unique natural wonder that showcases the Aloe dichotoma, commonly known as the quiver tree, which can live for up to 200 years. The quiver tree's unusual, branching shape and ability to thrive in extreme conditions make it an iconic symbol of Namibia's resilient and diverse landscape. This rugged region has become a prime destination for adventure motorcycle enthusiasts, offering a challenging yet thrilling riding experience.

The transformation begins as we journey towards South Africa's Northern Cape province, where lush, verdant regions await. Our ride continues as we cross the border at Velloorsdrift, seamlessly transitioning into the vibrant surroundings of Kakamas, a charming town nestled alongside the mighty Orange River. The expansive vineyards and orchards we encounter serve as a striking contrast to the arid deserts we have navigated in recent days, showcasing the diverse beauty of this region. The change in scenery offers a refreshing respite after the rocky, winding roads of the Fish River Canyon. As we approach Kakamas, the lush greenery and fertile lands stand as a testament to the life-giving power of the Orange River, which flows through this picturesque area. From here, we cruise along the spectacular False Bay coastline, a rider’s dream with its sweeping bends and endless ocean views. Our destination? This is the kind of ride that fuels every adventure motorcyclist’s soul, a route where every turn reminds us why we ride. With Cape Town now within reach, we roll into the city for the final time, the salty sea breeze and golden light of sunset guiding us toward the waterfront. As we gather for our farewell dinner, we take in the stunning views of Table Bay, the harbor reflecting the last hues of daylight. It’s a moment of quiet reflection—15 days of adventure, challenges, camaraderie, and unforgettable roads, all culminating in this incredible journey through Namibia and South Africa.
